Contributing to Turn About
Turn About, Inc. is a private, non-profit health and human service organization
which serves young people and their families in Leon and surrounding counties.
Turn About was incorporated in 1981 and is physically located at 2771 Miccosukee
Road in a building owned by the agency. Turn About counselors provide services
in this facility and also provide many services directly in the County's schools,
community centers, etc.
All money donated to Turn About, Inc. will go directly into services for children,
ages 5 – 17 and/or young adults in high school or undergraduate college pursuing
academic advancement. Turn About provides behavioral management training for
young people and their families to help prevent more serious problems, later.
For those young people who are struggling with issues of substance abuse, being
victims of crime and/or violence, suicidal ideation, having to make life altering
decisions, Turn About provides a “safe place” to learn to make better choices.
Many have no where else to turn. Many children and young adults have stated
that Turn About is their “safe place” to be until they learn how to make their
own environment safe.
Contributions to Turn About, Inc. can be designated to go directly into client
services, to fund scholarships for those young people unable to afford even
a sliding fee scale, to contribute toward the Turn About building fund, or
unrestricted which allows us to use the funds where they are most needed. Turn
About receives funding from the Department of Children and Families, the Office
of the Attorney General, United Way of the Big Bend, The City of Tallahassee,
Leon County, Leon County Schools, the Office of Drug Control, various foundations,
and is very dependent on private donations to meet the needs of our children,
adolescents, young adults, and their families.
Turn About not only needs financial contributions, but volunteers to help
with fundraising efforts, building repair and maintenance, some office work
such as answering the phone, making copies, etc. Due to confidentiality constraints,
we do not use drop-in volunteer counselors. Turn About does work with Florida
State University and Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University providing
a training site for masters and doctoral level interns.
Turn About is desperately in need of more building space, especially for our
Child Victim program and our college program. Randy Lewis, architect, has drawn
plans for the new building to be located on our present site.
Other kinds of contributions are greatly appreciated. Offices donating fine
furnishings as they remodel or downsize have been especially helpful. Some
magazines offer a free subscription when you renew your own. Please think of
Turn About for appropriate waiting room literature. A group of community leaders
donated advertising time on public radio when they purchased a particular sports
team air time. If you know of areas or businesses which need information on
Turn About, we will welcome your setting this up and keeping the area updated.
Pieces of art, either originals or prints, to be displayed or to be used in
a fundraiser would be especially helpful. Naming Turn About as beneficiary
in your will or other financial plans will insure a bright future for our young
people. Please feel free to talk to us about any ideas you may have. A willingness
to organize a fundraiser, such as a run, a carnival, or to work in one that
we have planned will bring great rewards for you and for Turn About's kids
and their families.
